Converting a British 332 Telephone

Several people have asked me for more detailed instructions about how to convert a British 332 Bakelite telephone (with a picture). 90% of the "converted telephone" are NOT converted correctly so here is the correct way to perform this conversion:

1) Remove the base plate of the telephone (using the 4 screws in the corners)
2) Remove all existing wire straps
3) Insert strap between T1 and T2
4) Insert strap between T8 and T9 (as seen on the diagram below)
5) Connect the white wire of the line cord to terminal T1
6) Connect the red wire of the line cord to terminal T9
7) Connect the blue (bell) wire of the line cord to terminal T11
8) Connect the spare green wire of the line cord to terminal T3
9) Insert a 3K resistor between terminals T11 and T12.

Hopefully the diagram should make this conversion a little easier :-)
Good luck

Great conversion chart I have just used it and my 332L works perfectly. I used a 3K resister which i purchased from RS electronics, I now have 19 spares but that was a cheap price to pay for a working phone. The black BT cables for conecting to the line are hard to find but ebay has some.
Thanks again for a great chart.

Dee

This is a great explanation, thanks so much. Only one question, what kind of 3k resistor do I need? I've had a look online and there seem to be lots of different kinds! Thanks again for any more help you can provide.

Very useful. However these phones are over 50 years old and there may be faults in the wiring under the terminal block. I had to add a strap between T10 and T12 to get the bell to work. You may have to use a trial and error approach. I simply touched a length of wire from one terminal to another, phoned the landline using my mobile and listened to the results until it worked.

To restore Bakelite I found Carplan Black Trim Wax very good.

Thanks very much for the instructions on how to convert my Bakelite phone, only trouble is the ringer doesn't work, any suggestions on what I can try?

Superb ...many thanks. Have a spare strap too. All I need now is some feet. FYI Ringer worked only when I pulled out other 'trim' phone.
